The Roots of Everything

When people ask me where my drive comes from, I don’t hesitate: it comes from my family—specifically, from growing up with four incredible brothers. We didn’t always have much, but what we did have was love, grit, and an unshakable belief that we were capable of doing something meaningful with our lives. Looking back now, I realize that my journey as an entrepreneur didn’t start with a business plan or a bold idea—it started around the dinner table, in the shared bedroom, in every challenge we faced together.

Each of my brothers shaped me in different ways, and together, they built the foundation of who I am as a leader, a business owner, and a man. This is my tribute to them—and to the vision we’ve carried together, one that’s bigger than any one of us.

The First Lessons: Watch, Listen, Learn

Being the youngest in a family of five boys meant I was constantly observing. My brothers were my first mentors, my role models, and at times, my toughest coaches. I watched how they hustled. I listened to how they solved problems. I learned from their wins—and their mistakes. Whether they were fixing cars, negotiating deals, or helping a neighbor, there was always a lesson in motion.

And they didn’t just teach with words—they led by example. One brother showed me how to stay calm under pressure. Another taught me the importance of loyalty. Another taught me never to back down from a challenge. The values they lived by—discipline, courage, humility—became the blueprint for how I would later run my business.

A Shared Fire

We didn’t always agree, but one thing was clear from the beginning: we all had fire. That unrelenting drive to make something of ourselves, to build a better life, to create something that would last. That drive was contagious. It lit something inside me that never burned out.

We pushed each other. If one of us was slacking, the others would call it out. If one of us succeeded, it wasn’t met with jealousy—it was fuel for the rest of us. It was always about elevating the whole family. That mindset became a core part of my business philosophy: when one person wins, we all rise. I’ve brought that spirit into every team I’ve built.

Mentorship Without the Title

In business circles, people talk a lot about mentorship—as they should. But I had something even deeper: mentorship through brotherhood. My brothers didn’t hand me anything, but they gave me the confidence to go after what I wanted. They helped me avoid pitfalls they had already stepped in. They pushed me to think bigger than my circumstances.

I remember calling one of my brothers late at night when I was debating whether or not to take a big risk. He didn’t tell me what to do—he just reminded me who I was. That quiet belief, that trust in me, gave me the strength to move forward. That’s what real mentorship looks like. It’s not always formal—it’s rooted in relationships, in history, in love.

Building Something Together

As we got older, our paths took different directions, but the dream of building something together never faded. Eventually, that dream came full circle when we launched our disaster restoration company. It wasn’t just about fixing damaged homes—it was about restoring hope. That mission, born from our own struggles and triumphs, gave the work meaning.

Bringing my brothers into the business wasn’t a strategic move—it was a natural one. We already knew how to work together. We already knew how to challenge each other, support each other, and move through hard times. We trusted each other with everything. That kind of bond is rare in business—and I never take it for granted.

Family Values, Business Values

The same values we grew up with are the ones that guide our company today. Integrity, loyalty, hard work, respect, and compassion—those aren’t just slogans on a wall. They’re the real-life code we live by, every day. When someone on our team is going through a tough time, we step in. When a customer is overwhelmed, we lead with empathy. That’s how we were raised.

And just like our childhood home, our business is a place where people are expected to contribute, to grow, and to lift each other up. We don’t do ego. We do effort. We don’t do shortcuts. We do it right, or we don’t do it at all. That’s what our parents taught us. That’s what we’re passing on—to our team, to our kids, and to our community.

Legacy Isn’t Just About Money

For me, success isn’t about how much money we make—it’s about the legacy we leave. And my brothers and I are committed to building something that lasts, something that matters. Whether it’s helping families after a disaster, mentoring the next generation, or simply treating people with dignity, we want our work to reflect the values we were raised with.

We came from humble beginnings. Nothing was handed to us. But we had each other. And that made all the difference. Today, I run a company with heart, with purpose, and with my brothers by my side. That’s the real win. That’s the story I’m proud to tell.

From Brothers to Builders

In the end, we’re just five brothers who refused to settle. Who believed that with enough grit, love, and faith, we could build something bigger than ourselves. We’ve done it one step at a time—together. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

When Disaster Hits Home

There’s a specific kind of heartbreak that comes with watching someone lose their home to fire. I’ve seen it too many times—the flashing lights, the smoke-stained air, the stunned families standing outside with nothing but the clothes on their backs. In those moments, people aren’t thinking about insurance or logistics. They’re thinking, What now? That question—What now?—is the reason I founded 911 BoardUp.

I didn’t set out to build a fire victim assistance program. I was already deep into the restoration industry, helping families and businesses recover from fire, water, and storm damage. But there was something missing in those early hours after a disaster. Before the cleanup. Before the rebuild. There was a gap. And that gap was filled with confusion, fear, and loneliness. I knew we could do better.

The Birth of a Better Response

911 BoardUp began as a simple idea: be there when people need it most. Not days later. Not after paperwork. Right now. Our teams are trained to respond immediately after first responders clear a scene. We show up not just to board up broken windows or secure a property, but to support the people inside. We offer resources, temporary housing connections, emergency supplies, and—most importantly—a human presence. Someone who understands. Someone who can say, “You’re not alone.”

What started as a small outreach quickly grew into a structured program with trained personnel, partnerships with fire departments, and a growing list of cities served. It’s not just about the physical damage—it’s about helping people navigate the emotional and practical chaos of a crisis.

More Than a Service—A Mission

When I talk about 911 BoardUp, I’m not talking about a business unit. I’m talking about a mission. Every time our team steps onto a scene, we know we’re stepping into someone’s worst day. Our job isn’t to sell a service—it’s to restore dignity, calm, and clarity in a moment of total upheaval.

I’ve seen what it means for someone to have a warm blanket placed around their shoulders, a bottle of water handed to them, or just someone to sit next to while the shock wears off. It may sound simple, but those moments matter. They become part of someone’s healing. And when we’re able to say, “We’ve got you,” and actually mean it—it makes a difference.

Collaboration with First Responders

One of the things I’m most proud of is how closely we work with fire departments. First responders do incredible work, but once the fire’s out, their role is often finished. That’s where we step in. We’re not replacing them—we’re extending their care.

By partnering with fire departments, we’ve built trust and created a seamless handoff that helps fire victims get the support they need right away. We’re often on scene within minutes, helping to secure the property, gather contact information, and offer guidance for what comes next. Firefighters have told us again and again how relieved they are to know there’s a compassionate team to carry the baton after they leave.

Long-Term Impact That Lasts

The truth is, 911 BoardUp doesn’t just help in the moment—it can change the entire recovery journey. When people are guided from day one, they avoid the traps and scams that often follow disasters. They make better decisions. They feel supported. They heal faster.

And that ripple effect goes further than you might think. Families who’ve received help from 911 BoardUp often become advocates in their communities. They come back and say, “You helped me when I needed it most. How can I give back?” That kind of full-circle impact is what fuels this work. We’re not just responding to emergencies. We’re building a network of compassion, one crisis at a time.

A Personal Responsibility

People often ask me why I stay so involved in the day-to-day operations of 911 BoardUp. The answer is simple: I’ve never forgotten what it feels like to face impossible odds. My own journey—from refugee to entrepreneur—taught me that when you’re in survival mode, even the smallest gesture can feel like a lifeline.

Starting 911 BoardUp wasn’t just about filling a gap in the industry. It was about honoring that experience. It was about making sure that no one facing a disaster ever feels invisible. And it was about creating a company culture where compassion is the standard—not the exception.

Looking Ahead

The need for this kind of work isn’t going away. In fact, as climate change and urban density increase, fire-related emergencies are becoming more frequent and more devastating. That’s why we’re expanding—training new teams, partnering with more municipalities, and refining how we respond.

But even as we grow, we’re holding tight to the heart of what makes 911 BoardUp different: showing up, caring deeply, and doing what’s right, no matter how big or small the need.

Answering the Call

At the end of the day, founding 911 BoardUp wasn’t just a business decision—it was a personal calling. It’s what happens when you combine professional expertise with a heart for service. It’s what happens when you see a broken moment and choose to build something hopeful in its place.

I don’t know what each day will bring. But I do know this: when disaster strikes, 911 BoardUp will be there—not just to restore property, but to restore hope. One family, one fire, one moment at a time.

Water damage can be a homeowner’s worst nightmare. Whether it’s from a burst pipe, a leaking roof, or a flood, the aftermath of water intrusion can leave lasting consequences if not dealt with promptly and properly. One of the most concerning issues that arise after water damage is mold growth. Mold can quickly take root in damp areas, leading to health problems and further structural damage. Fortunately, preventing mold growth after water damage is possible with the right approach. In this blog, I’ll share the best methods for preventing mold growth and ensuring that your home stays safe and healthy.

1. Act Fast: The Importance of Immediate Action

The first and most critical step in preventing mold growth is to act quickly. Mold thrives in damp environments, and it only takes 24 to 48 hours for mold spores to begin settling in areas affected by water. The longer you wait to address water damage, the higher the likelihood that mold will form.

How to Act Quickly: As soon as you notice water damage, whether it’s a leak, a spill, or flooding, take immediate action to stop the water source and remove any standing water. If necessary, contact a professional restoration company for assistance. The faster the area is dried, the less chance mold has to establish itself.

2. Thorough Drying: The Key to Mold Prevention

Once the water source has been addressed, the next crucial step is to dry the affected area thoroughly. Mold needs moisture to grow, so drying out any wet surfaces, including floors, walls, and furniture, is essential to prevent mold formation.

How to Dry Effectively: Use industrial-grade fans, dehumidifiers, and moisture meters to dry the area. Make sure to target every nook and cranny, especially hidden spaces like behind walls, under floors, or inside cabinets, as mold can begin to grow in these hidden areas if they remain damp. It’s important to keep the area well-ventilated to allow moisture to escape.

If you’re dealing with a large or persistent water issue, consider calling in professional help. Restoration companies have specialized equipment designed to thoroughly dry out spaces in a short amount of time. They also have the expertise to identify areas that may not be immediately visible but are at risk for mold growth.

3. Remove Damaged Materials

Not all materials can be salvaged after water damage, and attempting to dry certain items may only cause further problems. Materials like drywall, insulation, and carpet can absorb water and become breeding grounds for mold if not removed promptly. It’s important to assess the damage and remove any materials that cannot be dried properly.

How to Decide What to Remove: If materials are soaked through or show signs of staining, warping, or other damage, they should be discarded. If you’re unsure whether something can be saved, it’s better to err on the side of caution and remove it. For example, wet drywall and insulation are likely to harbor mold, so replacing these materials is the best option to prevent future issues.

4. Use Mold-Resistant Products

One of the most effective ways to prevent mold growth is by using mold-resistant products when rebuilding or repairing areas that have been affected by water. Mold-resistant drywall, paint, and insulation can help create a barrier against mold growth, even in areas that are prone to moisture exposure.

How to Incorporate Mold-Resistant Products: When repairing walls, ceilings, and floors, consider using mold-resistant materials such as mold-resistant drywall or cement board. These products are specially designed to resist moisture and prevent mold from growing. Additionally, applying mold-resistant paint to areas that are more susceptible to humidity can further help in preventing mold buildup.

In areas with high moisture, such as bathrooms or basements, it’s also a good idea to use mold-resistant sealants on floors and walls. These products create an extra layer of protection to minimize the risk of mold.

5. Control Indoor Humidity Levels

High humidity is one of the main causes of mold growth, and it can exacerbate any water damage that’s already occurred. Keeping your indoor humidity levels under control is essential to preventing mold from taking root, especially in areas that are naturally prone to moisture.

How to Manage Humidity: Use dehumidifiers in areas that are prone to high humidity, such as basements and bathrooms. Keeping the humidity level below 60% can significantly reduce the risk of mold growth. If you live in a particularly humid climate, consider installing a whole-house dehumidifier to help maintain consistent humidity levels throughout your home.

Another helpful tip is to ensure proper ventilation in areas where moisture tends to build up, like bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms. Make sure exhaust fans are working properly, and open windows to increase airflow when possible.

6. Inspect and Maintain Your Home Regularly

Regular inspections and maintenance can go a long way in preventing mold growth after water damage. Checking your home for potential water intrusion points, such as leaky pipes, clogged gutters, or cracks in the foundation, can help you catch problems early before they lead to significant water damage and mold growth.

How to Stay Proactive: Conduct regular checks on your home’s plumbing, roofing, and foundation to ensure there are no leaks or areas of moisture accumulation. Cleaning gutters and downspouts regularly can prevent water from pooling around the foundation, reducing the risk of water entering your home. Additionally, inspect windows and doors to ensure they’re properly sealed and free from leaks.

7. Consider Professional Mold Remediation

If you suspect mold has already begun to grow in your home, or if you’re dealing with extensive water damage, professional mold remediation is often necessary. A mold remediation specialist will have the training and equipment to safely remove mold, identify hidden mold growth, and prevent it from returning.

When to Call the Professionals: If you notice a musty smell, see visible mold growth, or have health concerns related to mold exposure, it’s important to consult a professional. Mold removal is not a DIY task, especially if the infestation is extensive. Mold remediation specialists will not only remove the mold but also help identify the source of the moisture and recommend preventive measures.

Protect Your Home from Mold

Preventing mold growth after water damage requires quick action, thorough drying, and ongoing vigilance. By acting fast to address water issues, removing damaged materials, using mold-resistant products, and controlling humidity, you can minimize the risk of mold forming in your home. Regular inspections and professional help when needed can also ensure that your home stays safe from the damaging effects of mold. Remember, the key to preventing mold is proactive care, so take the necessary steps now to protect your home and family from mold growth in the future.

When disaster strikes—whether it’s a burst pipe flooding your home, a fire damaging your property, or mold growing in hidden spaces—the need for professional restoration services is urgent. Homeowners understandably want to resolve the issue quickly and efficiently, but making the wrong choice when hiring a restoration company can lead to further stress, higher costs, and, in some cases, inadequate results. Over the years, I’ve seen countless homeowners make the same mistakes when hiring a restoration company. In this blog, I’ll highlight some of the top mistakes people make and offer practical advice on how to avoid them to ensure your restoration process is smooth and effective.

Mistake #1: Choosing Based on Price Alone

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is choosing a restoration company based solely on price. While it’s natural to want to save money, opting for the cheapest option can often lead to poor outcomes. Restoration services require a high level of expertise and specialized equipment, which costs money. If a company’s prices seem too good to be true, they likely are.

Restoration work, especially for damage caused by water, fire, or mold, can be complicated. Cutting corners to save money may result in inadequate repairs, leaving you with hidden damage that can worsen over time. For instance, improper water damage restoration can lead to mold growth, which is far more expensive and challenging to remediate down the road.

How to Avoid It: While cost is always a factor, it shouldn’t be the deciding one. Look for companies with a good reputation, verified credentials, and experience in handling your specific type of damage. Check customer reviews, ask for references, and get multiple quotes. The cheapest option may save you money upfront, but it could cost you more in the long run if the work isn’t done properly.

Mistake #2: Failing to Verify Licensing and Insurance

A restoration company’s licensing and insurance are non-negotiable. Many homeowners mistakenly assume that all restoration companies are licensed and insured. However, not all companies adhere to the required standards. Hiring an unlicensed or uninsured company can leave you exposed to liability if accidents happen or if the work is subpar.

For example, if a company causes accidental damage to your property during the restoration process, an uninsured company may leave you footing the bill. Similarly, a lack of proper licensing could mean the company is not following industry regulations, which could lead to future complications, especially when dealing with complex issues like mold or hazardous materials.

How to Avoid It: Before hiring a restoration company, always ask to see proof of licensing and insurance. A reputable company will have no issue providing this information. Check that the company is licensed in your state and that their insurance covers both liability and workers’ compensation. This ensures you’re protected if anything goes wrong during the restoration process.

Mistake #3: Not Checking for Proper Certification

Restoration work is highly specialized, and different types of damage require different expertise. A company might be great at water damage but lack the necessary experience or certification for fire damage restoration. Many homeowners fail to ask about a company’s specific certifications and end up with a service that doesn’t meet industry standards.

Certifications like those from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) indicate that the company’s technicians have been trained in the latest techniques and best practices for restoration. Without these certifications, a company might be using outdated methods or substandard equipment, which could affect the quality of the work.

How to Avoid It: Always inquire about the company’s certifications and experience in the specific type of restoration service you need. The IICRC is one of the leading organizations for restoration professionals, and choosing a company with IICRC-certified technicians ensures that they are knowledgeable and up to date on the latest industry standards.

Mistake #4: Ignoring the Importance of Timeliness

In the world of restoration, time is of the essence. Homeowners often make the mistake of not acting quickly enough after an incident, allowing water to sit in their home or fire damage to worsen. Many also don’t prioritize the restoration company’s response time. Delays can result in further damage, such as mold growth or structural weakening.

Restoration companies with a quick response time are essential to mitigating damage. A company that offers 24/7 emergency services and responds immediately to calls will prevent the damage from escalating further. The longer you wait, the more expensive and difficult the restoration process becomes.

How to Avoid It: When searching for a restoration company, prioritize those that offer emergency services and have a proven track record of responding quickly. Time is critical in minimizing damage, so don’t wait too long to hire a professional. The sooner you act, the better the chances of saving your property and reducing restoration costs.

Mistake #5: Not Getting a Written Estimate

A common mistake homeowners make is accepting verbal estimates or vague promises from restoration companies. Restoration projects are often complex, and prices can vary depending on the extent of the damage, the materials required, and the labor involved. Without a detailed written estimate, you risk being hit with unexpected costs later on.

Some companies may try to take advantage of this by lowballing an initial estimate and then tacking on additional charges once the work is underway. This leaves homeowners frustrated and financially burdened.

How to Avoid It: Always insist on a written estimate before work begins. This document should detail the scope of the project, the timeline, the materials required, and a breakdown of costs. Make sure the estimate includes any potential additional charges, so you’re not caught off guard later. A clear, written agreement helps protect both parties and ensures transparency throughout the process.

Mistake #6: Not Considering Customer Reviews and References

With so many restoration companies out there, it can be hard to know which one to trust. Many homeowners fail to properly vet companies by checking customer reviews or asking for references. Online reviews can give you a sense of the company’s reputation, while references from previous clients can provide insight into their experience and quality of work.

Without reading reviews or speaking with past clients, you risk hiring a company that has a history of poor service or unsatisfactory results.

How to Avoid It: Take the time to read customer reviews and ask the company for references. A reputable company will have positive reviews on multiple platforms, and they will gladly provide references. Pay attention to the overall sentiment, how the company responds to complaints, and the consistency of their service across different types of projects.

Make an Informed Decision

Hiring the right restoration company can make a significant difference in the outcome of your restoration project. Avoiding these common mistakes—like choosing based on price alone, failing to verify credentials, and not reading customer reviews—will help you find a company that is reliable, professional, and capable of handling your needs. By doing your research, asking the right questions, and ensuring you’re working with a certified, experienced team, you can protect both your property and your peace of mind during the restoration process.
